Faith, Doubt & the Idol of Certainty

Greg Boyd has a new book being published this month. It’s called Benefit of the Doubt: Breaking the Idol of Certainty (Baker Books, 2013). I’ll be reviewing the book in a couple of weeks. Stay tuned if you’re interested.

Greg’s ministry ReKnew is putting together its second event this year. This time it is to engage with the issues raised in his new book. Mark your calendars. On September 27-28th at Woodland Hills Church, ReKnew is hosting Faith, Doubt & the Idol of Certainty Conference.

Here’s what ReKnew previously posted on the book and conference:

Based on Greg Boyd’s new book, Benefit of the Doubt, Greg invites you to embrace a faith that doesn’t strive for certainty, but rather for commitment in the midst of uncertainty. Instead of assuming that your faith is as strong as it is certain, discover how your doubts can enhance faith and how seeking certainty is harming many in today’s church. Wrestle with your faith and experience a life-transforming relationship with Christ, even with unresolved questions about the Bible, theology, and ethics.

You may remember that ReKnew put on their first ever conference this past April in St. Paul. I was able to attend Open 2013 and connect with many like-minded folks. It was a great weekend!

If you’re looking to getaway for a stimulating conference, don’t miss this opportunity. You won’t be disappointed. Listen to Greg talk about the upcoming Faith, Doubt & the Idol of Certainty Conference.

Sermon: Heaven’s Watch & Hell’s Fury

As many of my readers and subscribers already know, I’m seeking to pastor a like-minded (missional-Anabaptist) church. I greatly appreciate your prayers during this time. It makes a difference.

Our current fellowship allowed me the opportunity to preach last Sunday. FBC Woodlands/Birnham Woods was gracious enough to film it so that it can be used in the search process.

In the following sermon, I talk about the power and purpose of prayer as it involves God’s timing and spiritual warfare. And it’s only 26 minutes long!

How have you seen God at work around you through the power of prayer? Please share your experiences with “the unseen” realms that war against us. Encourage others with your stories. It really matters.

God’s Favorite Place on Earth

If you haven’t heard, Frank Viola is coming out with a new book! It’s called: God’s Favorite Place on Earth (David C. Cook, May 1, 2013).

Attention: Frank has asked that you not buy the book until its release date on May 1st because everyone who buys the book between May 1st and May 7th will receive 25 free books & audios by 15 different authors.

I first made contact with Frank back in 2006 at a very tumultuous time in my life. I was stepping out of vocational ministry (I thought for good), and he was there pointing me to find my identity in Christ.

Over the years I have come to know Frank as a personal friend and mentor. Frank has a real gift. I believe that gift is leading folks to encounter the Lord Jesus in all his splendor. Once again, in a time of struggle and transition in my life, my brother comes out with a book that ministers to my soul.

And I believe it will minister to you as well.

Here is what Frank wrote about the book on his blog:

“God’s Favorite Place on Earth is different than anything I’ve ever written. It’s a hybrid of fiction and non-fiction. The premise of the book is simple and 100% Biblical: when Jesus was on the earth, He was rejected everywhere He went . . . from Bethlehem, to Nazareth, to Jerusalem. The only exception was the little village of Bethany. The curtain opens with Lazarus, who is now ready to die, telling the incomparable story of Jesus’ interactions with him, Martha, and Mary. God’s Favorite Place on Earth blends drama, devotion, theology, biblical narrative, and first-century history. Within each narrative, the common struggles that we Christians face are addressed and answered. These are just some of the many lessons you’ll find in God’s Favorite Place on Earth. Lessons that were born out of my own struggles, challenges, mistakes, disappointments, and experiences.”

I actually felt closer to Jesus when I read this book. I’m not just trying to help Frank sell a book here. So you can believe me when I say that you haven’t read a book quite like this one. This needs to be your next read.

Check out this video trailer for the book!

Please stay tuned for a Q&A with Frank Viola here at the blog on May 1st.

Blog News & Update 3/4/13

Hello blog readers and subscribers! Last year I expressed my intent to send out a Blog News & Update at the end of every month. I let January and February slip by me without an update, but it turns out that posting periodically works better anyway.

So maybe I’ll do a bi-monthly update instead.

I wanted to let you know that I’m going to be out of pocket this week. I’m not even sure if my mobile will work all that well where I’ll be this week, much less the internet for blogging. In case you’re wondering, I’ll be enjoying creation in the Davis Mountains of West Texas.

Since I’m going to be away this week, and I know that many of you are new to the blog, I thought it would help to list 10 of the most popular posts from the last several months. Here’s your opportunity to catch up on the blog.

Please SUBSCRIBE to the blog if you haven’t already. Exciting stuff is coming this month. Stay tuned for fresh new posts!

Finally, take a few seconds and “LIKE” my new Facebook page.
